Uplifting Communication — The Standard We Must Follow

Reviewing our writing, proofreading it, and making the necessary adjustments shows our dedication and the importance of our message

When I first started writing, I felt that I would not be able to create and edit content professionally. However, after five weeks of creating written content in which I share my opinions and experiences, I realized that I could communicate any message and be original just with the information I have in my mind. Nevertheless, I think the “standard of communication” can help me focus more on what is required to write in a way that catches readers’ attention while keeping them interested in what I write.

It is also important to consider the different ways we can influence people when we write something. As President Russel M. Nelson once said: “How we treat each other really matters! How we speak to and about others at home, at church, at work, and online really matters. I am asking us to interact with others in a higher, holier way. Please listen carefully: ‘If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy’ (see Article of Faith 13) that we can say about another person—whether to his face or behind her back—that should be our standard of communication.” When we write, we must remember that when we write something to communicate a message, we must have the best feelings toward others. This will help us transmit a message in a way that differentiates us from others.

When we follow this standard, we not only write in an uplifting way but also edit our content to show our respect for the people who will read our message. Reviewing our writing, proofreading it, and making the necessary adjustments shows our dedication and the importance of our message. We must remember that another person will be on the other side, reading and will feel different emotions depending on what we share. Our Savior said that the second great commandment is to love your neighbor as yourself. Uplifting others in our communication, whether it is written or spoken, can make a great difference and show that we follow Jesus Christ in every aspect of our lives. As a result, we will make meaningful connections to people who will trust us and find value in what we say.
